FIGHT, FLIGHT, OR WHAT IS RIGHT
UNSPOKEN BARGAINS #2: Tricks of the unconscious
BRINGING RELATIVITY TO THE MOMENT
When instinctive needs, real or imagined, are thwarted, emotions rise to the occasion. These two elements are in lockstep with one another. They are part of deep-rooted, neurological patterns we acquire over a lifetime. They require no thought. There is no choice. They just happen.
When anger strikes, it is often about our notion of how things should be, versus how they are. Employing relativity often helps right the ship.
For example:
A flight from New York to Paris takes seven hours.
But on this day, we sat on the tarmac for five hours before taking off.
Oh, the Injustice!
The Inconvenience!!
Insufferable!!!
Insupportable!!!!
In, in, in…!!!!
Yet, one hundred years ago, the trip by steamer ship would take seven days.
Two hundred years ago, the trip by sailing ship would take seven weeks.
Rail against the five hours lost?
Or sit in quiet celebration?
Retrieving one’s Self; a lifelong task.
“I’ve lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.” —Mark Twain
