WHY READ FANTASY FICTION?
It’s easy to dismiss fantasy fiction as escapist entertainment — fairy tales for children. Not connected to the real world. And much of what passes for fantasy glorifies archetypal struggles, but fantasy has a unique way of exploring what it is to be human.
When we loosen our grip on our physical reality, a spiritual dimension opens up. This separates us from the animal kingdom. This separates us from our animal nature. It is here that connections beyond the observable lie. The realm of possibility, of magic, the road to creation.
The sole of a foot roots us to the ground.
The soul of our being has no location.
From that perspective, all-there-is, can touch all-we-are.
This is freedom, this is liberation.
To paraphrase Robert Browning:
“If man’s reach did not exceed his grasp, what’s a heaven for?”
From Loy; In the forests of the mind:
“The world stands as it is.
The light we cast, is what we see.”
Why read fantasy fiction?
To remember.
